Carole Lister - Matron knows best !

Carole worked tirelessly for MHSC for more than 30 years. In view of her recent decision to step down, it was high time we paid tribute to "Matron". Although Carole no longer works as a Committee member, no doubt we shall continue to see her at galas and various fixtures.

This is what an anonymous writer had to say about her:

"Like so many of us, Carole inherited her involvement in swimming from her children.

Melanie and Heidi both swam for Market Harborough Swimming Club. Typically, Carole couldn’t sit still and watch, became involved, was bitten with the bug of administration and support and has been a part of the swimming fraternity in Leicestershire ever since.

She has done virtually everything – with the possible exception of actually swimming? Money handler, letter writer, broadcaster, chairman, drinks provider, announcer, president, coach, journalist, recorder, team manager, timekeeper, supporter, mentor, judge, political lobbyist, agitator, activist, – and from time to time, has even had the temerity to think of herself as a referee!!

Amongst her many accolades, she can include County President, a position voted by her peers and richly deserved – overshadowed only by her recent appointment as President of Market Harborough Swimming Club.

What words can we use to describe Carole Lister? Dedicated, focussed, energetic, forceful, annoying (sometimes) but always respected. She has made so many friends throughout Leicestershire Clubs and spends so much time in the administration of the County scene, that her long suffering husband, Alan, treats her as a house guest when she drops in briefly at home.

A few years ago she was lovingly nicknamed, behind her back, “Matron” and it seemed so apposite, that when it eventually leaked out to the wider sanctum it was only a matter of time before someone let it slip to her. Was she annoyed? Not a lot! Was Alan annoyed? Not a lot! Indeed, he is known to ask when answering the phone in his P.A. capacity, “Would you like to speak to Matron?"

Matron administers life giving input to the body of swimming in Leicestershire and it thrives because she, and people like her, selflessly give so much for the benefit of others. If any other Club has a “Matron” like ours, it should give thanks that it is in good and safe hands."
